The day is 4th Dec 2017. It’s a bright winter day. Family and friends have arrived at the banks of holy waters of the river Ganga. Pandit ji has setup the mandap. I get twitchy and restless as I haven’t seen her all day (thanks to the elaborate bridal routine that has been going on since last night).
Pandit ji checks his watch, sways his head sideways and emits a nervous click with his tongue. I hear his silent murmur despite the background sound of flowing river water. He has probably said it the 5th time by now “It’s getting late. The muhurat is going to be over soon.”
And all of a sudden we hear someone shout out “She is here!!”.
We all turn back. I see the woman of my dreams dressed like a princess 😍

Singing & dancing begins. Family members start exchanging traditional witty wedding digs at each other. If there was one way to describe it, It’s a head filling concoction of Indian aunties doing little rap battles and pot bellied Indian uncles performing dance offs. You’re never the same person again once you encounter such episodes in your life.

My dad lifts her dad off the ground. I’m sure he is going to regret that decision for the next few months. Oh boy! That sore back is gonna hurt.

Dadima starts head banging. Well not really but for a brief occasion, it does look like she just got back from the violent moshpits of a Russian metal concert.

Chaos has taken over. The sights. The sounds. The smells. And then pandit ji comes in to ruin the moment. “The muhurat is almost gone. Do we want to marry the two of them or not??” He shouts irritably. Everyone goes quiet and start lining up like sheep to head towards the mandap. If there’s one thing that can quieten down us Hindus, it’s the stark warning of a Pandit ji. Nobody argues that. Period.
A few sanskrit mantras and walking 7 circles around the mandap fire together. And there we are. Happily married for 7 adventurous lives 😇
